Nominations for the National Dairy Quality Awards are currently being accepted. Now in its 14th year, the program is designed to honor dairy producers from across the United States who produce milk of the highest quality. The deadline for nominations is September 10, 2007. [Read more.]

For the first time, NMC is offering travel scholarships to full-time graduate students interested in controlling mastitis and improving milk quality. Successful applicants will apply these scholarships toward attendance at NMC’s 47th Annual Meeting, January 20-23, 2008, in New Orleans, Louisiana. A maximum of four scholarships will be awarded. At least one scholarship recipient will be a graduate student at a university or college outside of the United States and Canada. The application deadline is July 31, 2007.[Read more here.]

All the papers presented at last month’s NMC Regional Meeting in Visalia, California are now available in the NMC Online Proceedings Library, which includes all the papers from NMC meetings back to 2001. This is accessible through the “members-only section” of the NMC website.

Papers presented at this year’s NMC Regional Meeting, held May 22-23 in Visalia, California, have been published and will be mailed to all NMC members. The papers will also be available in the Online Proceedings Library by June 5. The Online Proceedings Library is accessible through the “members only” section of the NMC website (the link is under the “membership” button).

A short course to be held during the NMC Regional Meeting will provide dairy herd managers with practical training and information on mastitis prevention and control. The preconference short course, scheduled for Tuesday, May 22 in Visalia, California, precedes the main program which will be held Wednesday, May 23. [Details here.]

During 2006, average SCC in U.S. herds enrolled in Dairy Herd Improvement (DHI) somatic cell testing was 288,000. This compares to 296,000 in 2005. The percentages of herds that exceeded 750,000, 600,000, 500,000, and 400,000 during 2006 were 3.9%, 8.3%, 14.3% and 25.2%, respectively. The current SCC limit in the U.S. is 750,000.

The trend for SCC’s over the last five years are encouraging. Hopefully average SCC will continue to decline in the future due to both genetic selection and improved management practices.

Mark your calendars! The NMC 48th Annual Meeting will be held January 25-28, 2009 at the Westin Hotel in Charlotte, North Carolina. The meeting will follow the same format as previous years, starting on Sunday and concluding on Wednesday.

Next year’s NMC annual meeting is scheduled for January 20-23, 2008 in New Orleans. The meeting will be held at the Astor Crowne Plaza Hotel, located on the corner of Canal Street and Bourbon Street — the gateway to the world famous “French Quarter”. Don’t miss it!
